Children are given a wide range of opportunities to develop their skills in art, craft and design activities.  Children are taught to appreciate art from a many different cultures and communities.  Pattern, shapes, texture and colour are key themes that are explored. Children have opportunities to use a variety of media including paint, water colours, pastel and charcoal.  Children will be able to visit a number of galleries and museums.

At St John’s Angell Town Primary School we aim to offer opportunities for children to:

  • foster an understanding and enjoyment of the arts both visual and performing
  • experience a broad and balanced range of artistic activities and show progression and skills development within these experiences
  • provide opportunities for children to develop and extend their skills through performance
  • to make links between the visual arts, literacy and other curriculum areas through provision of pictorial resources
  • develop their ability to observe, investigate, respond to and record the world around them through a growing variety of forms and media including sketchbooks and ipads
  • show development of ideas and their own skills through the use of a sketchbook from KS1 onwards
  • develop use of a range of tools, media and processes
